Treating shoulder pain with chiropractic care is often extremely effective. The shoulder is a complex joint that depends on equal muscle tone and smooth joint movement. When joints are misaligned or there are muscular balance problems, which commonly occurs with bad posture, the shoulder joint can become “clunky” and painful. Since the large muscle groups that move and support the shoulder also attach to the spine, chiropractors typically spend a portion of each day treating shoulder pain.
Successfully Treating Shoulder Pain
Shoulder pain can be debilitating, I know this from personal experience. Shoulder pain not only affects your ability to reach and carry but it also causes tremendous problems with getting quality sleep. For many patients with shoulder pain, sleeping on the injured shoulder side is impossible and sleeping on the opposite side is challenging as well. Because of pain and dysfunction that comes with shoulder injuries, treating shoulder pain appropriately is crucial.
At my San Diego chiropractic clinic, treating shoulder pain begins with a thorough examination so that we can close in on the source of the pain. In some cases, the source of the shoulder pain is muscular imbalances and in other cases, it is a tear in one of the four rotator cuff muscles (rotator cuff muscles perform the rotational movements of the shoulder). The cause of pain in some patients may be a ligament tear or a dislocation. You can understand why it is important to have a thorough orthopedic examination when there are so many potential causes of shoulder pain.
Once we have successfully identified the source, we can begin treating shoulder pain. Shoulder pain treatment is catered to each individual patient. That being said, pain is always associated with inflammation so treatment always includes therapies to help reduce inflammation and swelling. Depending on the type of injury, chiropractic treatment may include adjustments on the neck, back and shoulder, specific exercises and stretches or possibly all of these.
