Shoulder Pain Causes can Vary Widely
Shoulder Pain is one of the more common types of pain I treat in my San Diego Chiropractic Office. There are many different shoulder pain causes in San Diego patients – some of them are serious and some are less serious but they all can interfere with your ability to maintain full strength and flexibility in the shoulder.
There are also many different structures that are capable of causing pain in the shoulder. Common sources of pain in the shoulder include the rotator cuff muscles, the joint capsule, the biceps tendon and even the nerves from the neck.
Pain Between Shoulder Blades
One of the more common complaints that I treat as a chiropractor is pain between the shoulder blades. Often people will complain of shoulder pain but when asked to point to it they indicate that the pain is between the shoulders. This region is the upper thoracic spine but since the shoulder blades are part of the shoulder girdle the patients are not far off by labeling it “shoulder pain”. The area between the shoulder blades gets its nerve supply from the neck so it is important to evaluate the neck in order to determine the cause of the pain.
Chronic Shoulder Pain
Chronic shoulder pain is any pain that is present for more than 3 months. That is not very long! Typically, patients with chronic shoulder pain will state that their shoulders always hurt. Anyone with experience with chronic shoulder pain knows that this is not good. There are many causes of chronic shoulder pain that range between some recent injury such as a fall on an outstretched arm to chronic stress like that which comes from bad lifting habits or postural stress (like reaching for your computer mouse all day).
Shoulder Pain Treatment
Shoulder pain treatment from a chiropractor depends on the severity of the injury and how old the injury is. Shoulder pain treatments include therapies to reduce inflammation and adjustments from the chiropractor to improve or restore range of motion of the joint. In most cases, patients who are getting treatment for shoulder pain need to do specific stretches and exercises at home in order to fully recover and to help insure that they aren’t prone to easy re-injury in the future.
