Bad posture can account for strain to the neck muscles, especially when due to a bad posture sedentary position over long periods of time.
As a chiropractor, common neck pain symptoms that I see in my San Diego clinic are sharp pain with quick movements, dull achy pain with prolonged fixed positions, throbbing pain after a sprain / strain injury (car accident) and achy pain laying down or trying to sleep.
Symptoms of neck pain are usually due to joint and muscle injuries but in some cases the nerves can be affected causing pain to run down the neck and into the arm.In most cases, neck injury is caused by sprains and strains. Your neck has less muscle supporting it than any other part of your spine.

When you fall or have a car accident, the weight of your head is exposed to G-forces that are too large for the muscles and ligaments in your neck to support.
The neck muscles get stretched and torn and the ligaments that hold normal joint alignment are damaged. This causes joint pain and muscle achiness resulting in an injured neck.
The most common neck pain diagnosis that I see as a chiropractor are sprain / strain injuries.
Diagnosing neck pain is often simple but must be done according to established protocol so more serious conditions aren't missed. Chiropractors are experts in diagnosing the causes of neck pain.If you have neck pain see your chiropractor as soon as possible. Your chiropractor is your best chance for accurate neck pain diagnosis and getting pain relief without the use of drugs.
As a chiropractor, I believe that chiropractic care is the best neck pain treatment. This isn’t just my opinion; patient satisfaction surveys continuously rank chiropractic treatment as one of the best treatments for neck pain.
