Back pain is the most common complaint that I treat as a chiropractor in my San Diego clinic. Patients hurt their backs by lifting improperly, sitting with bad posture, working on surfaces that are too low, falls, accidents, etc. Regardless of the mechanism of injury, an episode of back pain will give you a whole new understanding of how it can negatively impact your life.
Back Pain Treatment
Treating back pain is not easy. Successful treatment includes identifying what caused the injury and trying to take steps to avoid subsequent injury during the course of treatment. This sounds simple but often it isn’t as straightforward as it would seem. In most cases, back pain is caused by repetitive stress such as prolonged sitting or heavy lifting versus an injury that can be related to a single incident. If your job requires that you sit for long hours and sitting aggravates your back you will have to limit the time that you sit in order for treatment to be successful. I am sure that you can imagine how this might be difficult for a person who does computer work for a living. An exaggerated example of this would be that if a worker suffers a severe hand injury every time he hits his hand with a hammer an important step in reducing chance injury in the future is to get him to stop hitting his hand with the hammer.
Chiropractic treatment for back pain at my office begins with an examination and history that we use to identify the specific areas of the back that are aggravated. The exam includes orthopedic tests that will direct to the irritated joints/muscles as well as give us information as to whether or not chiropractic care is the right choice for your condition. Chiropractic care will include therapies to relax the muscles and reduce inflammation as well as chiropractic adjustments that reduce pain and improve range of motion.
