If you have low back pain you need to see a chiropractor, right? The chiropractor has always been known as the fix for lower back pain. While this is true, there are risk factors for back pain that can’t be eliminated with treatment. Thankfully, however, these factors can be compensated for with chiropractic maintenance, the right exercises, adequate stretching and proper diet.

The following is a list of risk factors for back pain that will not change but can be controlled with chiropractic. Those with multiple risk factors will have a better chance of suffering from ongoing episodes of back pain.

• Being middle-aged (risk drops after age 65).
• Being male.
• Having a family history of back pain.
• Having had a previous back injury.
• Being pregnant.
• Having had compression fractures of the spine.
• Having had previous back surgery.
• Having spine problems since birth

The following is a list of risk factors for back pain that you can change. Those with multiple risk factors will have a better chance of suffering from ongoing episodes of back pain.

• Lack of regular exercise.
• Postural stress.
• Smokers are more likely to have low back pain.
• Being overweight.
• Being under stress.
• Depression.
• Drug use.

I always try to make the patients of my San Diego chiropractic clinic aware of these risk factors. Episodes of back pain, neck pain and ongoing headaches are always much easier to control when we control risk factors.

Have you ever had low back Pain?

If so, you are part of a large group of people. Statistics tell us that about 80% of us will suffer with low back pain over the course of our lives.

Low back pain is a common complaint for the patients that I treat in my San Diego Chiropractic clinic. Chiropractors have the reputation of being the “back doctors”. I can’t tell you how many times I have had a patient tell me about a friend with either elbow pain or knee pain or shoulder pain who wouldn’t come into my office for care because they think that all chiropractors treat is back pain.

A recent episode of back pain that I experienced just renewed my level empathy for my patients with low back pain. Not that I had lost my empathy for my patients, but a little personal experience always helps with my focus.

Despite the reputation of being back doctors, chiropractors are trained to deal with all of the joints whether they are part of the spine or not.

The process that affects the joints in the low back is the same process that affects other joints in the body. They are irritated by a fall or some other injury. The irritation causes inflammation and the inflammation causes pain, swelling and scar tissue formation. The scar tissue limits the joints range of motion and can become a source of pain itself.

Treatment can be a simple as a few joint adjustments and a few sessions of therapy.

The next time you have a joint that aches, try chiropractic treatment. Most joint problems that cause lower back pain respond well to chiropractic care.

Lower back pain is one of the most frustrating things for patients to deal with. I have had what I consider bad lower back pain, bad neck pain and other injuries that get my full attention. Of all of these conditions, I think that lower back pain has been the worst spine complaint that I have had. Since I became a chiropractor in San Diego, I have taken informal surveys of my patients regarding the area of their backs that create the greatest level of disability when aggravated and more often than not the answer is lower back pain.

Chiropractic care for lower back pain is pretty straight forward. Usually low back pain is accompanied by muscle spasms which have to be addressed first. Most low back pain patients do very well with treatment that begins with the application of hot packs and electrical muscle stimulation. Electrical muscle stimulation sounds intimidating to some people but it is a very comfortable, relaxing form of therapy that is excellent at soothing muscle spasms.

Once the muscles have been relaxed as much as possible, the affected joints of the lower back can be adjusted. Much like the sound of electrical muscle stimulation, some people find the sound of having their joints manipulated intimidating. In fact, the overwhelming majority of even first time chiropractic patients find the joint manipulations to be comfortable and soothing to their back pain.

Chiropractic care is delivered as a series of treatments rather than a single session. That is not to say that you may not attain 100% relief with one session, but you shouldn’t count on it. The rule of thumb in regards to how much care you may need for a low back issue is that you must allow for one week of active care (2 to 3 visits per week) for each month that you have had a particular problem. This level of frequency and consistency will ensure the greatest level of recovery with chiropractic care.
