Does Health Come From A Pill?

What does Lipitor have to do with health? I was listening to the radio the other day and there was a commercial for Lipitor playing. At the end of this commercial it said “see our ad in Health magazine”. I have a copy of health magazine at my office so I decided to take a look.

I was shocked by how many drug advertisements besides Lipitor that were in Health magazine. I flipped through some other magazines that I have that are health oriented and they too are filled with advertisements for one drug or another. Is controlling high blood pressure or lowering cholesterol or controlling depression with medication the key to health? Maybe in a few isolated cases it is. Most of the “conditions” that we suffer with as a society are brought on by poor diets, unhealthy habits such as smoking and drinking and lack of consistent exercise.

Unfortunately, many of us eat fast food on a regular basis, we don’t exercise, don’t get enough rest and then wonder how we have lost our good health. I often ask the patients in my San Diego chiropractic practice how their blood pressure is and I am always surprised when they respond with something like “it is fine, I checked it this morning and it was 120 /80 – I take high blood pressure medication”. The drug companies have done a good job at making us think that if we control the signs of disease (such as blood pressure or cholesterol) or the symptoms that we feel with drugs that they manufacture then we are healthy.

I would never suggest that anyone discontinue their medications or ignore their doctors advice but I would suggest that if you are on medication that you explore remedies for your ailment that utilize diet, exercise and nutritional supplements.

Complete Chiropractic

“Move it or lose it sister” That old saying brings a lot of wisdom with it. Movement makes us look and feel young. I explain this to my patients in my San Diego chiropractic practice all the time.

While muscles are designed to move our joints through their full range of motion, if they are not used for this purpose on a regular basis they will shorten and restrict us from full range of motion. Once this process begins, it can be very difficult to reverse, especially as we age.

Untreated injuries can also lead to restrictions in joint motion. When our joints are injured in falls, automobile accidents, poor lifting habits, etc, a degenerative process starts in the joint that leads to irritation, inflammation, pain, spasm and scar tissue formation. Eventually, enough scar tissue forms so that joint motion is altered or restricted which can lead to arthritis.

In my chiropractic practice, your health is our top priority. Our intention is to restore your health to its peak. To accomplish this, we employ a balanced approach that includes chiropractic care, the appropriate nutritional support and stretches with exercises. I have found that when this regiment of care is followed that complete recovery is possible in most cases.

Postural Awareness and Chiropractic

Being a San Diego based chiropractor, I talk to my patients all the time about the ill effects of bad posture. Poor posture can lie at the root cause of headache problems, neck pain, back pain, etc.

Oddly enough, whenever I think about my posture I find that I need to correct something. I will either find my upper back slumped forward, my head extended out in front of my body, my lower back rounded forward or my shoulders rolled forward.

Posture is difficult to maintain. I would guess that probably half of my patients end up in my office because of some injury, old or new, that is further aggravated by postural stress. Eliminate postural stress and many cases of neck pain and back pain would be eliminated as well.

One of the problems that we encounter with posture is that our awareness of our posture declines as we focus on other duties. Posture is especially difficult to maintain when we are seated in front of our computers. Our natural response toward any type of work that we perform is to lean into it. Getting close to our work helps us focus. Unfortunately, getting close to our work in this way instigates poor posture and the resulting stress can cause a number of different aches and pains.

Poor posture has become habit among most of us. The only way to improve your posture is to become aware of your bad posture and practice maintaining good posture. Sounds simple but it takes self awareness and plenty of dedication.
